On The Horizon For April!

  On The Horizon

It’s the heart of Winter and already time to take a gander into The Fan man’s Ole Crystal Ball to look ahead to April showers, Easter eggs, Easter bunnies and which comic books will be hopping off the shelves in April! Superman gets a Super-makeover courtesy of Jim Lee and a host of new creators! Joe Quesada returns to Daredevil! Ron Marz returns to Green Lantern! Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, Wolverine and the X-Statix get Marvel Knighted! Strykeforce strikes back! IDW and Steve Niles adapt Dawn Of The Dead! And the Punisher faces The End! These big events and more are all On The Horizon for April 2004!

DC:

Superman #204 - One of the most anticipated events of 2004 begins here. After a super successful run with writer Jeph Loeb on Batman, artist Jim Lee joins writer Brian Azzarello on the ongoing Superman series! The 12 part “For Tomorrow” storyline kicks off in this 40 page issue. A cataclysmic event has struck the world and millions of people have vanished without a trace! A year has passed, and Superman - and readers - will be left with many unanswered questions!

Adventures of Superman #627 - The Super-makeover continues in this series with the new creative team of writer Greg Rucka and artists Matthew Clark and Nelson. An old foe returns to Metropolis, while Clark Kent is demoted to a crime beat reporter for The Daily Planet!

Action Comics #813 - Uncanny X-Men writer Chuck Austen is joined by former Lady Death artist Ivan Reis and cover artist Art Adams to begin a new direction for this long running Superman series. This issue tells the story of a day in the life of Superman. There are robbers to catch, children to save and minions of Darkseid to stop!

Batman #626 - A new creative team comes aboard with this issue. Writer Judd Winick and artists Dustin Nguyen and Richard Friend are joined by cover artist Matt Wagner as they kick off the 5 part “As The Crow Flies” storyline. This storyline will pick up the pieces from the previous storylines: “Broken City” and the monumental “Hush!”

Batman: Gotham Knights #52 - A sleeper hit here! Writer A.J. Lieberman and artists Al Barrionuevo and Francis Portela deliver a tale that will also wrap up some loose ends from “Hush.” In this issue, the Joker takes on Hush! ’Nuff said!

Green Lantern #176 - Love him or hate him, you can’t deny that writer Ron Marz is one of the definitive Green Lantern writers. Marz left his mark on this series and this character in many ways. Now, Marz returns to the scene of the crime for a six part storyline called “Homecoming.” Joined by artists Luke Ross and Brandon Ramos, Marz’s brief stint will find Kyle Rayner returning to Earth after spending more than a year in space. From his place in the JLA to his girlfriend, Kyle will find that everything has changed!

The Flash #209 - As a longtime Comic Fanatic, the cover alone sold me on this issue because it brought back fond memories of the classic DC Comics Presents #1. That’s right! It’s a Superman vs. the Flash issue! Oh, and Superman is joined by the rest of the JLA! It seems that Wally West’s fellow heroes don’t appreciate being left in the dark when Wally refuses to divulge his true identity…

DC/Vertigo:

Bite Club - This new 6 issue miniseries will read like The Sopranos with vampires! Writers Howard Chaykin and David Tischman are joined by artist David Hahn and cover artist Frank Quietly on this mob meets vampire tale. When Eduardo Del Toro is murdered, he leaves control of his cartel to his youngest son - who just happens to be Miami’s first vampire priest!

Image/Top Cow:

Darkness/Hulk - This one shot brings together two veterans of the Hulk and The Darkness. Writer Paul Jenkins is joined by fan favorite artist Dale Keown for a story that finds the violent killer The Darkness coming face to face with the violent pacifist, the Hulk!

Strykeforce - The classic Top Cow super team returns! Writer Jay Faerber is joined by artist Tyler Kirkham as Morgan Stryker leads a new team of outlaw heroes-for-hire. Familiar faces and all new heroes are on tap for this five part story!

Marvel:

Marvel Age: Fantastic Four - The Fantastic Four joins Spider-Man in this new all ages friendly format that retells the original stories with a modern update. Inhumans and Sentinel writer Sean McKeever works from the original plots by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, with art provided by Makato Nakatsuka.

Daredevil: Father - Marvel Editor-in-Chief and former Daredevil artist Joe Quesada returns to the character he revitalized along with writer Kevin Smith. This time, Quesada is on his own as writer and artist for this five part miniseries. As part of Daredevil’s 40th anniversary, this miniseries finds Daredevil battling an all new foe during the deadliest heat wave in New York City history.

Spider-Man - The long anticipated new ongoing Spider-Man series from writer Mark Millar debuts in April. Joined by artist Terry Dodson, Millar’s new series will be under the Marvel Knights banner, one of four new Knights debuting in April. Rumor has it that someone discovers Spider-Man’s secret identity! And this issue kicks things off with a Spider-Man/Green Goblin battle!

Wolverine #13 & #14 - Two issues of Wolverine ship in April as Logan joins the Marvel Knights! To help Wolverine celebrate, writer Greg Rucka and artist Darick Robertson bring back Wolverine’s archenemy - Sabretooth!

Incredible Hulk #70 & #71 - Writer Bruce Jones has been writing this series as a Marvel Knights title for awhile now, so it only makes sense that the Hulk finally gets Marvel Knighted in April. Joined by one the best Hulk artists of all time - and one of The Fan Man’s all time favorite artists - Mike Deodato, Jr., Jones kicks off the Hulk’s Knighthood with two issues in April and by pitting the Jade Giant against Iron Man!!

X-Statix #21& #22 - Writer Peter Milligan’s X-Statix series gets Knighted this April. This may be enough for me to give this series a second chance. Milligan and artist Mike Allred begin the X-Statix Knighthood with a five part storyline that pits the X-Statix against the Avengers!

Ultimates Vol. 2 - The chronically late Mark Millar/Bryan Hitch Ultimates gets restarted with a new #1 issue in April. One year has passed since the conclusion of Ultimates Vol. 1. (Hopefully that’s in comic book time - not shipping time!) In addition to the Ultimates, new super teams and superheroes have been popping up around the world including Ultimate Captain Britain and the Ultimate Defenders!

X-Treme X-Men #45 & #46 - Chris Claremont’s X-book comes to an end with two issues in April. As things come to an end, old friends reunite as a new era begins…setting the stage for May’s new Excalibur series!

Human Torch #12 - Another Tsunami series bites the dust in April. Human Torch comes to an end with this issue as Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm battle the Dragon Man.

Punisher: The End - Definitive Punisher writer Garth Ennis brings the life and saga of Frank Castle to an end with this 56 page MAX one shot. Joined by legendary artist Richard Corben, Ennis delivers a tale that finds the Punisher in a world gone mad - a world where the Punisher may be the sanest man on the planet! Lord, help us!

IDW Publishing:

Aleister Arcane - I have already figured this out. If the folks at IDW want a successful comic book, they only have to do one thing: get Steve Niles to write it! Niles is joined by artist Breehn Burns for this tale about Aleister Green, a late night TV horror host. Green is forced into unhappy retirement, but he now has a new fan…

Dawn Of The Dead - One of The Fan Man’s all time favorite horror movies gets the comic book treatment courtesy of IDW and - you guessed it - that Steve Niles character! Niles is joined by Wake The Dead artist Chee for this adaptation of George A. Romero’s Dawn Of The Dead, one of the greatest zombie movies ever made!

Dracula’s Revenge - Written by Matt Forbeck with art by Szymon Kudranski, Dracula’s Revenge is based on the new board game from Human Head Studios. Prostitutes are being savagely butchered in Whitechapel. Sound familiar? The problem is that Jack the Ripper hasn’t stalked these streets in a decade…and he never drank his victim’s blood!
