He's the writer of one of Comicdom's biggest sleeper hits, DC's Manhunter. Recently, Marc Andreyko found the time to sit down and talk to The Comic Fanatic.Com about his red-hot heroine, and why fans of Identity and Infinite Crisis and all of their tie-ins should be reading this comic book! Read on, as I have finally hunted down one of my personal favorite writers, Marc Andreyko!
The Fan Man: Thanks for taking the time to talk to The Comic Fanatic.Com.
Marc Andreyko: My Pleasure. Thank you guys for the great support of Manhunter.

The Fan Man: Now, I don’t want to make you feel old right off the bat, but it seems that I’ve been hearing your name around the industry for awhile. However, it’s your work on DC’s Manhunter that’s had me shouting “Marc Andreyko” from the rooftops. Tell us a little bit about this new Manhunter.
Marc Andreyko: Her name is Kate Spencer - a divorced, chain-smoking, mom-of-one, federal prosecutor in L.A. who specializes in metahuman crime.

The Fan Man: How does a female prosecutor go from upholding the law to wearing a super-heroine costume and enacting her own brand of justice?
Marc Andreyko: When the system is manipulated one time too many by murderous super-villains, KATE has enough and decides to "help" the system right wrongs.

The Fan Man: Explain this for me: How do you - as a writer - endear a character like Kate Spencer to the reader, when she has so many unlikable characteristics? I find myself reading this book as much for Kate the human character as I do for Kate the costumed vigilante.
Marc Andreyko: Thanks for saying that. Kate’s "real" life interests me a lot, too. As far as the unlikable things, Kate has just as many foibles and flaws as all of us. The difference is we rarely see female characters who are portrayed as anything but Madonnas or whores. If Kate was say, Kevin instead, I would be curious to see if there would be the hoopla about her "likeability". And, hell, give the gal a break! She’s trying to be a better person! : )

The Fan Man: How would you say that this Manhunter differs from the other heroines in the DC Universe?
Marc Andreyko: The lack of exposed skin?! : ) And the fact that she chooses to do this for humanity, not for personal revenge or a legacy. She likes being a proactive hero.
__________________________

The Fan Man: What - or who - was your inspiration for Kate Spencer/Manhunter?
Marc Andreyko: Katharine Hepburn, Helen Mirren, Lara Flynn Boyle (on "The Practice"), Susan Sarandon. All them powerful dames who don’t define themselves by their gender or their men.
__________________________
The Fan Man: What - if any - connection does this new Manhunter have to previous Manhunters?
Marc Andreyko: Well, keep reading!: ) This is explored in detail in Manhunter 10-14.
__________________________

The Fan Man: So, does a reader have to be familiar with previous Manhunters and their histories to enjoy this new Manhunter series?
Marc Andreyko: Absolutely not. A knowledge of continuity enhances the ride, for sure, but I’m trying to fill in the blanks for newbies without drowning them in minutiae.
__________________________
The Fan Man: Judging by the numbers, a lot of Comic Fanatics may not be aware that this Manhunter and this series are set firmly in the DC Universe. Describe for us this Manhunter’s place in the DC Universe.
Marc Andreyko: Well, she's in L.A. physically, but she is definitely interacting with the DCU from the "Identity Crisis" tie-in of Shadow Thief's trial, to JLA appearances, to the addition of Chase to the cast.
___________________________

The Fan Man: Some DC Comic Fanatics are really missing the boat by not picking up Manhunter. Hasn’t/isn’t this book dealing with a little more Identity Crisis fallout?
Marc Andreyko: Yup. In addition to the aforementioned Shadow Thief trial, there are appearances by The Calculator and the “Villains United” folks, too.
___________________________
The Fan Man: With the Infinite Crisis and all of its tie-ins on the horizon, what role will Manhunter be playing in the DC Universe?
Marc Andreyko: I would tell you, but then I'd have to kill you!: ) Sorry!
___________________________

The Fan Man: For those who have been following along with this series, what’s up with this Manhunter…er…hunter who has been stalking some old, familiar faces?
Marc Andreyko: Someone is taking out all the Manhunters in the DCU in a brutal fashion and Katey is on that list. The whys and wherefores are explained in the "Manhunted" arc (#10-14).
